On Watch

Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge

I took my brother, who was visiting from Monroe MI, to the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge to explore and to capture some photos with his new Canon 80D. Walking near one of the ponds, we scared up this blue heron who flew around, then landed nearby. He posed for about 5 minutes until deciding to move on.

Dave - he flew up here this year. The last few years he has driven up - about 11 - 11 1/2 hrs when traffic is decent. Last summer, traffic around Chicago and through WI was horrible with all the road work going on; added almost 2 hrs to the drive. So he just bagged the drive this year.

I'm not too far from Monroe. There should be good shooting opportunities for him there as well. How long a drive was it for him?

Yesterday I had a close encounter with a blue heron on a walk at a small lake walking path. He landed close enough that even with my longest lens, 200 mm, I could have filled the frame but all I had was my iPhone so I didn’t even try. Paul
