I went and looked at this area using google maps. Your right about vastness, it goes on and on and on! Nothing, absolutely nothing is there. Paul

It maybe touristy, but I also loved Eilat....of course I could snorkel every day, but, that city was really good and generous to me. You should go back, I am sure that it is unbelievably different. Traveller

Hi, about 25 years ago I was sent to Israel to work for a few months and I must add loved every single minute of it and would love to return. I was based in Eilat and on my days off I used to jump on the bus to visit different places, it was almost a days travel if I remember rightly to some of the places such as Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
I have one memory which has always stayed strong and that's of travelling through the barren landscape on a yellow bus picking up Conscripts on the way. This is exactly how I remember it! Car629

Edit and Correction: It is in fact only about 30 miles to Jerusalem...hummmm, it took me a more than a week to cover these 30 miles, of course I drove down to the Red Sea and South first...I have checked this mileage, and it seems impossible to me to be true, but Jerusalem is maybe that close to the Dead Sea....hummmm. I was about 1/4 of the way up Masada....the Herod palace and later last stand place during the Rome/Jewish War...there is, improbably, a fresh water well atop Masada.
Masada is incredibly high up....and like the En Gedi Oasis....water flows weirdly all the way from the Jerusalem highlands in rock fissures...maybe a 100 miles? Weird.

I keep coming back to study this more and I'm wondering where your vantage point was? Were you hiking or on a road and just pull off to shoot a pic! Paul

When I looked at the thumbnail, I expected quite boring a picture. Then, after opening the image, the yellow bus attracted and hold my interest (probably because it gives size proportions to the whole scene). Well done, IMO, Traveller! ~ db.

On second look, I did not catch this as well as I might like....this really stretches as far as the eye can see, and I am not sure that that vastness is in this picture. As for the RPG attack, yes, becoming common enough...but how do you live there, where do you hide? I am for my entire life a student of war....well, that is just another problem to be overcome by fighters. Best Wishes, Traveller (Still, I appreciate you seem to have taken the emptiness from this image....thanks for the comment, I feel a little better)

If that's the Sinai (looks like what I would imagine it would) then how come someone hasn't blown up that bus with a RPG yet? Paul
