Nicosia – Europe’s only divided capital city. The old town lies within an imposing defence wall erected by the Venetians in the 16th century.
In continuous habitation for over 4500 years, Nicosia has been the capital of the island since the 10th century.
The only divided capital city in Europe. It was divided into the southern Greek Cypriot and northern Turkish Cypriot parts in 1963,
following intercommunal violence, and before the Turkish invasion in 1974.
