Burg Pfalzgrafenstein. Toll castle on the Falkenau island (also known as Pfalz Island).
Known as “the Pfalz”, this former stronghold is one of the most famous sights on the Rhine. Built originally by King Ludwig the Barvarian in 1327,
with subsequent additions in the 1340s. In 1477 it became the property of the Count of Katzenelnbogen (of Burg Katz fame!).
Later additions were made in the 17th and 18th centuries. It is now a museum, accessible via a ferry from Kaub.
