Clapham Junction

This prehistoric site near Dingli Cliffs is one of the big mysteries of early Maltese history.
Thought to be cart ruts, the purpose of the complex network of tracks gouged out of the rocks here and elsewhere in Malta and Gozo is not known.
The tracks are up to 60 cm deep and have an average separation of 110 to 140 cm. Some cross while others form junctions (see next image),
creating the illusion of railway switching yards. Numerous theories have suggested they were gouged out by sledges transporting goods,
that the tracks are real cart ruts for transporting goods, or that they were an irrigation system.
Recent research supports the idea they they were formed by wooden-wheeled carts eroding the soft limestone.

In the distance, on the right of the image, is the Verdala Palace, built as a summer residence in 1586 by Grand Master Hugues Loubenx de Verdalle,
now the official summer residence of the President of Malta.
