In 2006, Abingdon celebrated the 450th anniversary of being granted a Royal Charter,
with the Bun-Throwing ceremony, during which 4500 buns were launched by local dignitaries
from the top of County Hall. This ceremony began in 1760 to mark the coronation of King
George III, and has been repeated 30 times since then to mark special occasions, including
the coronations of kings and queens, royal jubilees, the end of the Crimean War, VE day and,
more recently, the Millenium.
