Feldherrnhalle (Field Marshals Hall)

Munich, Germany

Located at the Odeonplatz in Munich the Feldherrnhalle was a symbol of the honours of the Bavarian Army. It contains statues of military leaders Johann Tilly and Karl Phillip von Wrede. The central sculptural group was added in 1882, after the Franco-Prussian War.

This was the site of a march organized by followers of Hitler in November 1923. The police ordered the marchers to stop and then opened fire killing 16 of the marchers. As a result of the march Hitler was arrested and was sent to prison. This was one of the efforts by the Nazis to take over the Bavarian State, commonly referred to as the Beer Hall Putsch.
