This image looks toward the altar and interior of the dome, which was capped for over a century at the level of the "drum" of the dome,
as no one knew how to span such a large space.
In the mid 1400's, Brunelleschi solved the problem and built the dome we see today.
The dome can be seen in the previous picture.
