Stefan asks: Hal Edgerton @ MIT who invented the strobe has many similar such pictures. However, his strobes fire at thousands of times per second. How did you time the shots so well? Which lens did you use? Response: Oh, I've read about Edgerton for years. As I recall, his strobes were both of short duration with high output and rapid repeatability. Both attributes are necessary for the work he did. For the milk and water drop studies, I use a high-end consumer flash (sb800) and set it at 128th power so that the duration is about 1/50,000th of a second. I adjust my exposure based upon that fixed flash output. I managed to get the crowning and other interesting patterns thru trial and error. Most of my drop studies involve at least 500 exposures to yield 10-20 keepers. The lens I use for most drop studies is the Sigma 180. I like that the lens is a distance away from all those drops, and the lens is very sharp, just a joy to work with. Question: Also, when you do your macro work with insects, why did you gravitate to such a long lens? Does it allow you greater distance between you and your subject? wouldnt an 85mm micro be enough? Response: Yes, I like the longer focal length for lighting purposes. Also, the focus speed can be OK, even for macro work (which is not usually the case with macro lenses). I do use my 105mm lens a lot as well, especially if I wish to couple the lens to extension tubes. Thanks for looking! Eric Delmar
