Charles Friedman 1945 - 2014

Dr. Charles A. Friedman MD

Yes, Charley was a classmate of Dean, Don, and me. He went on to get his M.D. at Hopkins and specialized in the care of premature babies, just like Raymond’s wife Gayle Spence.
His two sons both went to Princeton, and one was awarded the Pyne Prize, the highest honor given to an undergraduate.
I think both his sons also became physicians.

Dean Pope and A.G. Kasselberg (of East High and our class at Princeton) were club mates of Charley’s (sort of like fraternity brothers) and kept in closer contact with him than I did.

I always loved Charley’s vivacious spirit and good sense of humor. It comes through in our class photo (attached).

Dean and A.G. may wish to tell us more about his professional life and family. He left a fine legacy.

Charley was both a wonderful person and a wonderful doctor. He had a magnificent sense of the absurd. It was terribly sad that he had purchased the ticket for his trip to Memphis in October for the CHS reunion when the marrow transplant “failed.” He declined rapidly after that. He did get to travel in the last year to visit children and grandchildren. He is being buried in Boston, but he was always a loyal son of the South. Indeed the last time he was in Richmond was for a Princeton alumni college on the Civil War led by the great Jim McPherson. I am going up to the funeral on Thursday to say goodbye to one of my best friends for many, many decades. I attended my first toga party with Charley—at the Junior Classical League annual meeting in Bloomington, Indiana in the summer of 1962. It wasn’t quite up to Animal House standards.

Rest peacefully, dear friend.

Dean
