Wanting to maintain the overall 'darkness'
of the bird I selected him and feathered the
selection and used curves to lift the 'lightness'
then inversed my selection and upped the brightness
of the background and desaturated it a tad.

More the kind of image I wanted - now wonder if he'd
like his photo taken again?
