I understand your point, about better photos, but many people define "candid" as just that candid. Just to capture a moment in time, is sometimes enough reguardless of light, model pose and so on.
I think this is a wonderful image.
I am a bit of a purest and define a candid as a capture of a moment of time, unrehersed, unscripted with the immediate enviroment as natural as possible, no additional light sources or reflectors to help "stage" the candid, no "help" from a obtrusive shutter pusher giving direction.
I am not saying there is anything wrong with scripted, simulted candids, I personally just don't call them candids, I call them simulated candids. In this case the artist has clearly stated there was no posing, no lighting setup, just a shutter click.
Just the way a purest like me likes it.
Peace

It isn't about whether I like it or not, it's about how to take a better photo. Almost any shot, whether candid or not, can be made better at the time of taking with just a little thought. Any subject can be posed to take better advantage of existing light and to show the subject in a more attractive way. It can still be a shot in a candid environment but with better results. This is not a bad shot, that was not the point. I just think with a couple of easy steps, it could have been made better.

I like it the way it is, it's a candid, and that's the way you caught it.

I like the picture and half the face in shadow. Nice work.

Nope no posing at all. The boys were playing in the pool and my son was standing with the light to his back, I called his name and he looked up at me that is when I took the pictue. I like it with half of his face in shadow, but that is ok I don't always like what others do :-).

Sorry, meant to say silver or white reflector, gold if the shot were in color.
Bruce Ward23-Jun-2004 09:43
I agree. A silver reflector just off to his left would have relieved some of the shadow on that side. Also, turn his body a little more to the front so more of the far shoulder shows. I presume there was some posing done with this shot, even though candid in nature.

I find though a nice candid.. I think for this shot it's too dark on the right side.. It does not seem to match with the left side contrast wise..Rafi
