Birch bark is bright orange on its inner surface, but it becomes a creamy white on its outer surface, and it separates into thin papery layers. Birch bark was of course used by Native Americans to make canoes, bowls, and wigwams because of its light weight and flexibility. Now it has lots of uses, including as plywood and in the making of skateboards, guitars, and model airplanes. Birch also serves as a winter food for moose, deer, and porcupines.
