Fr. James B. Reuter, S.J. (background info)

BALIK TANAW: Fr. Reuter used to be my teacher for the subject "Mass Media & Society" back in school. He actively participated in
the original People Power Revolution against the Marcos dictatorship in the 1980's and was sooo busy then that my final exam for
said subject was misplaced twice and so worriedly thought that I would get an "INCOMPLETE" grade (a first, if ever) for the subject
that year! On top of that, the class' final exams for "Sociology" under the late Ms. Estelita Juco - another active voice in the
revolution - also had to be repeated when her home (along with our papers!) got burned down under suspicious circumstances. :-(

“James Reuter came to the Philippines in 1938, as a young scholastic. He studied Philosophy then taught at the Ateneo de Manila. When the war broke,
Fr. Reuter was interned by the Japanese and suffered hunger for 3 years and 3 months. He was released dramatically in February of 1945.

Repatriated, he was ordained at Woodstock, Maryland in 1946, with a Theology degree granted by Georgetown University.
The next year he went to Fordham University to study radio and television.

In 1948 he returned to the Philippines and taught in high school and college at the Ateneo de Naga and later on at the Ateneo de Manila.
He organized the Ateneo Glee Club and travelled with it over most of the Philippines.

Among other plays, he directed “The Sound of Music”, “My Fair Lady”, “Camelot”, “500 Years in 90 Minutes”, and many others.

At present he is the National Director of Mass Media, for the Catholic Church in the Philippines. He helped organize UNDA/ASIA, the
international Catholic association for radio and television, and OCIC/ASIA, the international Catholic organization for audio-visuals and films.

On the local front he was one of the founders of the Philippine Federation of Catholic Broadcasters.

During the Papal visit in 1981, he received a special award through the hands of Pope John Paul II, for faithfully and courageously
upholding truth, justice and integrity in Catholic Communications. He was the 1989 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for Journalism,
Literature and Creative Communication Arts.

Fr. Reuter is a priest whose parish has been the stage, the radio, the printing press, the shooting lot,
the dressing room, the light box, the director’s booth, the theatre.

But strangely enough, all through the years, in every production, his driving effort has been through the media –
"to bring God to man and man to God.”
