Southern Pygmy Clubtail

Ward Pound Ridge, Westchester County, NY

Family Gomphidae (Clubtails)
Genus Lanthus (Pygmy Clubtails)
Species vernalis (Southern Pygmy Clubtail)

While Sandy and I were looking for critters to photograph, we met some friends who were doing a dragonfly count. This clubtail was handheld when I took the shot. While we personally don't net insects, when the opportunity arose to photograph this dragon up close, I took advantage. After some pics were taken, it was released and flew off unharmed.

Nice shot, Lloyd. I've tried shooting some dragonflies, and other insects, and I don't know how you could
ever use a tripod on them. I'm much to slow in setting up to ever get ready before they fly away. Great shot here.
Excellent detail. Vote.

Amazing macro Lloyd - you mean someone was holding the creature while you shot it?
Guest 17-Jun-2006 05:07
So, it's not in flight, it's not sitting on anything...what's happening here? -Ben
