I found this mural and I stopped in my tracks. These are memories I have of
Avalon in the 1950's. I rode here once on a seaplane. I used to dive for coins
thrown by passengers of the "Great White Steamer" (S.S. Catalina) and I remember
Saint Catherine Hotel. The all wood Chris-Craft "Miss Catalina" would race out
to greet the Great White Steamer every day around noon and had a siren to give all
a thrill. At night it would go out on shine spotlights on the flying fish that would
surface hearing the boat above.
The famous Casino had a ballroom for "big band" dances on the upper level and below,
a theater to see movies.
The S.S. Catalina, Miss Catalina, seaplanes, and the Saint Catherine are all gone sadly...
