Along Broadway, between 42nd to 49th streets, the night is alive. Hordes come to witness a sea of seductive neon billboards that collectively showcase the cutting-edge of American outdoor advertising today. It’s like one huge outdoor party except that everyone's acting like they're in a museum: it’s surprisingly quiet because everyone’s busy looking up. You have to experience it to believe it.
FYI, you need a permit from the mayor of New York City to take street photography, I was told. And to use a tripod, you need another permit which they call a tripod license. So you better be acting like a tourist and don’t you be looking too suspicious!
I handheld all my shots, wrapping myself around lamp posts, street signs, telephone booths, and even a trash bin or two, anything to keep my camera steady at the slow shutter speeds needed to capture the night. I pray I didn’t do too badly! Enjoy.
for handheld shots, these are fantastic! I know what you mean - I have found myself leaning on walls and trash bins several times myself! I read somewhere about London passing a bill about street photography - didn't know NYC already has it - such a pity.
Hi Bobby,
I've been to NY many many times, walked along the same streets and avenues both day and nighttime, took pictures too, but your shots make NY more alive and exciting. I guess my perspective is that of a mere tourist who just needs to have pictures taken for posterity. I lack your keen appreciation of the sights of NY. Thanks for sharing.
