Located in the northwestern United States, Montana ranks fourth in size among the 50 states with the 44th largest population.The total area of Montana is 147,046 sq mi (380,849 sq km) with an estimated number of 1 million Montanans who live there. Yellowstone National Park in southern Montana and northern Wyoming was the first national park in the nation. Montana has the largest grizzly bear population in the lower 48 states. The state's wide-open spaces include Glacier National Park which was established in 1910, a vast wilderness preserve that passes into Canada. The park’s many snow-capped peaks, lakes and alpine hiking trails are showcased along its famed Going-to-the-Sun Road, a 50-mile trek that provides some of the most amazing views in Montana.
