Antler Shedding Time

The other day Jim Gephart asked, referring to this photo http://www.pbase.com/bkiefer/image/56208393, if the deer shed their antlers late down here. It turns out that the shedding period extends from January until April. Thursday I saw five bucks that had shed their antlers very recently. There were two others still sporting them. This one was feeding very near a fence on a side road and it appeared that he had lost them within hours.

For more info on antlers and their development see:

you really got close on this one, nice capture.
I wonder if the antlers just fall off all at once or do they get loose like a childs tooth lol
Have you ever seen antlers laying on the ground? wonder what happens to them

I agree with the other comments here, this one looks huts.. eww! It makes me curious, do their antlers shed by itself?

Excellent image Buz,
Just the other day my wife and I were out for a drive and spotted some bucks still sporting their antlers, at the time I mentioned that it was sure late for them to still have their antlers.....

This really is interesting. I'm also amazed at the green available. Perhaps if I got down close I'd see green here, too. Really nice to see up close at this stage.

I guess that answers that question. How do you get as close to the deer as you do? Fantastic deer photos.
Guest 25-Feb-2006 13:46
looks painful for them. Nice closeup.

Very interesting. We have deer on our farm, but I have never seen
any antlers lying on the ground. I've always found this puzzling.
