Yes, it very well could be. I've seen many of them in several different forests here.

Although it is not wise to identify a mushroom from a picture alone, I am fairly certain you have found the Reishi mushroom, Ganoderma lucidum, which is prized by the Japanese for its supposed medicinal properties. Its visual properties are quite striking too.
