Cumberland: The End of the Canal

Cumberland, nicknamed "The Queen City," is the northern terminus for the canal. Today there's a newly opened 150 mile-long trail called the GREAT ALLEGHENY PASSAGE that allows you to hike or bike all the way from Pittsburgh to Cumberland as the original canal plans intended.
Cumberland is also the start of the NATIONAL PIKE (CUMBERLAND ROAD) moving westward to Wheeling. An extension to this road going eastward to Baltimore was built in the 1820's and is called the NATIONAL PIKE. But the actual NATIONAL PIKE was built to take settlers west, not east.
This photo was taken near the spot where the canal ends and looking back into the old town and the Potomac River.
