Beit She'arim dates back to the 2nd century. It was the seat of the Sanhedrin, the Jewish supreme court, headed by Rabbi Yehuda Hanassi (compiler of the Mishnah), who is buried here. The town was destroyed by the Romans during the 4th century. Its remains were first discovered in an archeological dig in 1936.
