Tiniteqilaq 04

Greenland

I climbed up to the top of a rocky hill overlooking Tiniteqilaq and Sermilik, and found an old graveyard there. All of the graveyards that I saw in Greenland were on top of hills like this. I assume there is a reason for this, but I couldn’t find any information to throw any light on this on the Internet.

The reason for sites on hills is probably connected with the Inuit tradition of graves being in sight of the sea (their 'heaven' is in the sea, not the sky).

Incidentally grave markers never have the name of the deceased on them - that would prevent their persoanlity and skills being reborn in someone else in the future.
