These kids playing on the mudflats of Red Beach Two probably have no idea that close to 6,000 men lost their lives here in November 1943. War correspondent Robert Sherrod, one of the first civilians to set foot on Betio after the battle for Tarawa, said: "What I saw on Betio was, I am certain, one of the greatest works of devastation wrought by man."
