This was back in the mid 90's before Yunnan declared itself "ShangriLa" for tourism purposes.
What was once a sleepy, small town in farm country where Westerners were a curiousity (we were stared out, literaly with mouths open by young locals) is now over run with domestic tourist every season, as are most places of interest in China today.
