Sawada hybrids for Kosaku Sawada, the hybridizer. When WWII came, Sawada was the 1 in a thousand Japanese who was not imprisoned nor his business confiscated, because his neighbors and competing nursery mend pleaded with the govt to leave him alone. He hybridzed the beautiful Camellia japonica 'Sawada's Dream'.

El Frida isn't exactly a Kurume in that it was developed in the 1930s by Overlook Nursery, though perhaps from hybridization with Kurumes. Overlook in Mobile, Ala. called their hybrids Sawada hybrids.
