 Glenn Dale hybrids...

The Glenn Dale hybrid group was created by B. Y. Morrison at the U.S. National Arboretum beginning in 1935. The objectives were to have cold-hardy plants with large and varied flowers, blooming from mid-May through mid-June. Of the over 70,000 seedlings grown and evaluated in the breeding program, 454 were selected and named, and 440 were distributed to cooperating nurseries in 1941, 1947-1949 and 1952.

The Glenn Dales have been thoroughly documented, beginning with "The Glenn Dale Azaleas" published as Monograph 20 by the US Department of Agriculture in 1953, continuing with "The Azalea Book" by Frederic P. Lee in 1958, "Azaleas" by Fred Galle in 1985, "The Bell Book" by Bill Miller and Dick West in 1994, and "The Glenn Dale Azaleas Revised" by Bill Miller in 1996. However, few definitive pictures of them have been published.

Most of the images of 372 of the Glenn Dales in the alphabetic galleries were contributed by Dan Krabill, with careful attention to correctness and accurate color rendition.
