 Deciduous azaleas...

Deciduous azaleas drop their leaves in the fall, and grow a new set of leaves in the spring. There are 16 species of deciduous azaleas native to areas of the US, and more deciduous species are native to Japan. Thousands of hybrids have been derived from these species. Named hybrids are typically distinguished by their bloom color, type and time, and their foliage and plant habit—and by carefully keeping their labels intact.

Some deciduous azaleas are cold-hardy to Zone 3 (-40°F), while many more are cold-hardy to Zone 5 (-20°F) and warmer. R. austrinum, the "Florida flame azalea", is the most tolerant of warm temperatures, and is being bred into other deciduous hybrid azaleas (such as the Aromi hybrids below) to increase their heat tolerance.

The images are organized by plant name in alphabetic order, along with a few other galleries. Click a gallery image to open it, and then scroll down or use your browser search to find a plant of interest. Click an image to enlarge it and maybe see the date, location, photographer, file name, camera and camera settings. Click your browser Back button to return to the small images.

The colors you see only approximate the true colors of the flowers, since they depend on the picture lighting, the camera and its settings, the ambient lighting at your computer, and the adjustments on your computer screen.
