Smoky Pipe and Snake

Pilliga Nature Reserve, NSW

The Pipe Nebula in southern Ophiuchus. With 51 minutes integrated exposure, various of the deeper dark dusty tendrils within the neck and bowl become clearer. Several well-defined dark nebulae are below the Pipe in this view - including the curvy Snake Nebula (Barnard 72). Five globular clusters feature on the left-hand side of the image: M19 and M62 are the two fuzzy 'stars' prominent to the left of the Pipe's mouthpiece, while NGC's 6304, 6316 and 6293 lie closer in to the Pipe. Faintest stars are around mag 16.5.
