Houses once used for winery, then naval families

The sun came out very briefly, casting shadows.

The houses are abandoned but they're part of a registered historical site and are like a museum.

Cary,
Thanks for those great memories. Also, the pictures you put up from that time, at your new page at
http://www.pbase.com/caryblue/pt_molate_1979

The Scat-About activity van must have been fun. I've never heard of such a thing. I can see.
though, why you loved that place.

I lived at Point Molate from approx 1979-1981. I was 8 years old when my father was transferred from San Diego. We lived in a green home facing the bay, just like one of the houses shown above. We used to roller skate while my mom played racquetball with the neighbor in the abandoned warehouse that was along the railroad tracks. There was a park and a fire station that played movies every Sunday for the kids. There was a tennis court. An activity van called the Scat-About would come every week and entertain us. I remember the names of the two men: Pete and John Ha! My sister and I used to explore the woods above the park, following deer poop, hoping to find their den. A storm knocked down some trees adjacent to our garage. We used to pretend it was our ship I LOVED THIS PLACE

Shirley,
No, I live in the next city over, a bit closer to Berkeley. Point Molate is just such an
interesting and not much visited place, that we returned later, more of us, to enjoy it,
and the visit to the Captain or Commander's house.

Shirley,
Thanks for all the really interesting history. Very sad about your father though. That
was a heavy responsibility he had too. Re the Commander, we were shown the inside
of his home and you can see those (if you haven't) at the other gallery, at

I really like the images you've shared of your time at the firehouse, the certificate, and
the two guard gates used. Interesting that the old rotting boat you remember had
been used by Jack London. Thanks again.

I resided at Point Molate 1953-1954. My father passed away at our residence in June 1954 from a massive heart attack. He was in charge of the fuel for the ships. He worked in the administration building. A navel bus would pick us up in front of our "quarters" and take us to the schools in Richmond. I attended Lincoln Elementry School. The commander of the base was Commander Peeler. I joined the Jr. Fireman club. We would meet every Saturday at the firehouse. I think I still have the certificate I earned. There were two guard gates. One as you entered and another if you drove THOUGH the base to a beach area. I remember there was an old rotting boat in that area. There was a rumor that Jack London either own the boat at one time, or rode in it. I would have loved to go through one of the "quarters" once again. We were there only one year but I have fond memories.

You may have known Michael Needham? He lived here during the same years
('76-'80) and has posted to this gallery, athttp://www.pbase.com/andrys/daylight
along with others who lived in Pt. Molate.

Also, on a firehouse picture, he mentioned it doubled (or tripled) as a laundromat
and movie theater.

A few of us made a 2nd trip to Pt. Molate and were able to enter the Captain's House
or Director's House, and that gallery is athttp://www.pbase.com/andrys/pt_molate2

The friends I went with also took their own sets of photos, and I link to their sets.

Thanks for visiting!

I resided at Point Molare from 1976-1979, in the second home from the right showing the upper frontal row of homes.
