David was really good for a few reasons, a (other than the small tree or branch)free standing in marble. Also, the block Michelangelo used had been worked on by a few artists and none were able to get around the huge crack down the middle of the block. Michelangelo was able to.

In time I believe Cellini's Perseus may come to be regarded as an even greater work than Michelangelo's David.
