After going through the doorway cut through the outer wall of the moat (see previous photo) one can see the outer fortifications.
Parts of these fortifications may date from the 13th Century. They fell into disuse by the 18th Century and by then the tops of the towers and walls were removed.
Doubtlessly the stone was reused elsewhere.
