national park - national forest border

above Port Angeles, Washington

This photo on the Olympic peninsula of Washington State shows perhaps a simple distinction between land management practices of the U.S. National Park Service and the U.S. Forest Service.

On the left of this photo, heading upland, you see trees - this is Olympic National Park.

To the right of the perfectly straight line in the middle of the photo - this is Olympic National Forest.

Draw your conclusions about land management practices accordingly, all pun intended. We need timber for housing construction and many other societal applications, but we also need them to support our mountain watersheds (where did you think all of our drinking water comes from...?) and to avert sedimentation of the resulting rivers that bring that water closer to us...
