use space economically

Sendai, Japan

This rice field is situated between Sendai city and Izumi, right next to a street and many other commercial activities. When you travel throughout Japan, you realize how ubiquitous the rice fields are and how mountainous the islands are - they cover roughly 70% of the nation - so there's not a whole lot of land left between the competing demands for agriculture and human habitation.

And this compacted (by necessity) land use is why bicycling is more practical in Japan.
