The town of Kaub with Castle Pfalz situated on a rock in the middle of the River Rhine. It looks like a ship with bow, stern and a tower resembling a mast. King Ludwig of Bavaria built the Pfalz in 1327 as border protecion. It later became a toll station for ships with merchandise. Although the castle was modernised in the 17th & 18th centuries the majoritiy is still from the 14th century. The restored castle Gutenfels sits on a hill above the town.
