Fulking is a small sleepy village with a population of about 250 people. About 5 miles north-west of Brighton and near the Devils Dyke, it is mainly strung out along a narrow tree-lined lane lying directly under the South Downs which rise steeply immediately above it. There are a number of attractive timber framed houses, some with thatched roofs, mainly of 17th century origin. The 17th century pub, the Shepherd and Dog, is beside a spring, which is said to have never run dry. In the street near the spring there is a tap and horsetrough bearing a tiled inscription from a psalm.
