Maliau Basin, Sabah, Borneo

The Maliau Basin is situated just above the equator in south-central Sabah, some 40km north of the Kalimantan border and about 190km north-west of Tawau. The Basin is about 23km in diameter and has an area of 390 square km. Its rim is generally up to 1500m in height except for Gunung Lotong on the north rim which is over 1900m above sea level.
“Maliau” is a Murut word for milky or murky, clearly referring to the colour of the Maliau River.

Great photos... takes me back to when i was there in 1992 with raleigh international... preparing the site for the research centre.. i have some ariel photos from a helicopter, tho nowhere near the quality of yours.. best experiance of my life..

Hi Real Goshen, Lake linumunsut is about 18 to 20kms north of Maliau falls. I myself have not been there. To get there, the reserchers' normally flys in. Maliau Basin is a place I always wants to go back, you can say its the most beautiful natural place you can find in Malaysia.

Your pictures brought back memories of my field geology days! Back in 1987, we were mapping for BHP Minerals Ltd, the waterfalls looked as good as you have featured! Only then we had to climb them and map them, too! Ughhhhhhh! It was pristine then as we were the first ones there!!! Before the team of scientists!
