23 Tomb of Saint Erkembode 87001956.jpg

VIIIth century tomb of Saint Erkembode, who was the fourth bishop after Saint Omer and died in 742. The tomb became the object of a major pilgrimage and th pilgrims left their shoes as testimony to the distance they had travelled. It was said that the Saint died half paralysed and this led to the popular belief that the shoes of crippled children left on the tomb would lead to a cure.
