20120324_23497 Water Spark - Afternoon Light (Sat 24 Mar)

At Home, Sydney NSW

Although I was in the middle of a major clean-up operation at home and didn't really have time, I was just about to head out to do some late afternoon sunlight shots for my PAD. However just as I was heading to the door I noticed this bottle of water which was being lit up by the afternoon sun coming in from the door leading to the balcony and casting a mixture of intense shadow and diffracted light on the wall behind.

Doubting that I'd find anything more interesting in the places that I was planning to go to I grabbed the tripod, set up and started shooting. And did so just in the nick of time for literally (I kid you not) within two minutes the light had faded in intensity leaving only a bare hint of the spark shown here and a diffuse shadow.

I did try this with a B&W filter but while it removed the distraction of the background wall colour it also cost quite a bit of the diffracted light's intensity.

I'm with Marisa on selective colour, but I'm also with her that this is a really good photo. ... in fact I might try stealing this idea. ;)

Light is a tricky, but essential element of every photo and you are quite right sometimes it’s a matter of minutes or even seconds.
Here you could capture exactly the right visual impression of a short moment. I like the composition very much. I’m a little less persuaded about the selective colour, maybe because it’s an effect I cannot appreciate in any special way, but it’s only personal taste.
The photo itself is really a good one

"chasing light". Literally... I have read it a hundred times on the pBase site- doing a PaD or lots of photography forces us to look at the ordinary and find something unique.

Caught this one in the knick of time.

Sometimes the most interesting thing is right under our nose. Fun capture.
