As discussed in more detail in image 3812, some of the granite remains of a once-great office building have found a final resting place in Carlton Gardens, near the Melbourne Museum. Those who carved the name into this slab of the building may have imagined that it would last through the ages, and in a sense this piece of it probably will. But the remainder of the former Colonial Mutual Life building lasted a mere 64 years, its very opulence condemning it to being uneconomic by the dawn of the age of skyscrapers.
