Gate Assignment Office on top of old E


Miami International started controlled unleased common-use gates in the latter part of 1977 when the new E-Satellite terminal opend. We used the old 20th Street Ramp Office on top of old Concourse E as the Gate Assignment Office prior to our move to the ground floor of the E-Satellite where we used cameras to view most of the gates. We had 3 gates on Concourse F (F-4, F-6, and F-8), 12 gates on the new E-Satellite, 4 gates on old Concourse E (E-8, E-9, E-10 and E-12), and 2 gates on Concourse D (D-4 and D-12).

This is the gate "plot" for Wednesday, May 10, 1978, in the early morning, for most of the day on my shift. It is interesting to see the airline and flight numbers for each gate. The planned gates would often change due to a good number of flights being delayed throughout the day, necessitating gate changes. One delayed flight could cause three or four gates changes in a domino effect. These were the actual and planned assignments on the board at the time:

When Concourse E was rebuilt the gate numbers changed and E1 became a bus station at the base of the concourse.
