Early 1963 - Coast Guard Station Lake Worth Inlet on Peanut Island (description below)

USCG Station Lake Worth Inlet, Peanut Island, Florida

Thank you to QMCS Carl Backman, USCG Retired for contributing this great image scanned from a color slide. He was assigned to the Coast Guard's Presidential Security detachment at Woods Hole, Massachusetts and they worked from a private home in Hyannis when President John F. Kennedy vacationed there. When the Kennedy family came to their home on Palm Beach in the winter the security detachment operated from CG Station Lake Worth Inlet. See the description under the Honey Fitz photo for details on the security detachments. Senior Chief Backman retired from the USCG in May 1971 after 24 years of service.

Here is his description for this photo: "The little white building to the left was the office/communications space for the security patrol. The metal building to the left of that was a generator building and to the left of that and behind the boat house was a very large Quonset hut used for storage. The chiefs and officers lived ashore. The rest of the TAD people lived on the third deck in bunk beds. The U. S. Secret Service agents did not live on the island. Nobody stayed in the boathouse. When the Presidential Yachts Honey Fitz or the Patrick J. were present there would be Naval personnel living on the yachts. On the main building the part to the left was the station office space and the one to the right was the recreation room. The USMC Reserve AMTRACS where kept behind the main building and I believe there was four or five of them."

He further states: "The security patrol had two 40-footers and two 30-footers. The 40-footer's were used for chase boats and the 30's were used for patrolling the area where the President was staying. There were two station boats, a steel 40-footer and a 36-foot motor lifeboat. Also there was a 25 foot ramp boat used liberty and supply runs. The pictures I've sent you are from slides and may not be too clear. I have a lot of them from 24 years service."
