Surprisingly this bird shows sign of the southwestern subspecies comptus with the malar stripe but lack
that ssp yellow lore. Ssp spodionotus would be the expected ssp but that one lacks the malar.
In Chimborazo the two intergrade and this could possibly be and intergrade, in which case it has
probably flewn far for being a Brush-Finch.
