"VOC" Sign Dating Back to 1669 - A Dutch Colonial Relic

Jakarta, Indonesia

Indonesia was a Dutch colony for long 350 years. It ended only when the Japanese invaded Indonesia at the beginning of the second World War. For the longest time the Dutch government in Indonesia was basically controlled by a consortium of influential merchants, translated in English to be United East-India Company. Of course, the name was in Dutch and it stands for Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie, abbreviated "VOC". This consortium governed Indonesia with an iron fist. I didn't want to go into much detail on what we learned in history classes back then. The name "VOC" evoked so much fear and also so much hate in Indonesian people for over 300 years. Thankfully, it was a situation in the past and water under the bridge.

This restaurant, Dapur Babah, has an impressive display of old, Dutch colonial relics. Some I would call museum pieces actually.
