question (mark)

I wish to thank all the commenters on my yesterday photo.
Especially Kim and Tim, because they brought to my mind a buried memory.
A friend of mine once asked me "Which are the artists you think have had an influence on your work?"
Only now I remember I replied
"I believe the source of my photos is literary, more than visual"

Like Tim, I thank you for your reference. And yet, I must admit I am often one of those most frustrated by the inability to translate the meaning of your images. It seems that semiotics is subjective. For the sender's message to be understood, the reciever must have a similar knowledge base and store of experiences. If, as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words, some confusion is also bound to arise, in mistranslation, similar to the way poetry likewise is often over-analyzed.
Unlike Tim, however, I don't believe you intended this to describe your state of being. (I'm a literalist, and for me to see this as a symbolic question mark, I'd have to turn the image sideways! Although it does look a little like a magnifying glass.) Rather, I think it's your own reflection that it is we who are hooked on your images. You've got our interest. We keep coming back because we know there is something to interpret; something "more than meets the eye". Otherwise this would merely be a closeup of a wall hook. Thank goodness it wasn't a picture of a screw or a nail! (Wait...wasn't there a nail...?!)

Thanks Adal, whatever your source though, I don't believe you can give up. You are hooked ;-)

It's interesting what you say about the literary source...
I suppose I share a bit of that as often my photos have behind them a much stronger influence of the universe of the words, than of the visual one itself and I am a firm believer that one does not go far without the other. But whatever it is that makes our creative spirit go wild and break boundaries, it should always be acknowledged and celebrated ;)
