| Shortly after 3 AM on Tuesday June 27th, Webster firefighters responded to a vehicle fire that was reportedly close to a house at the corner of Veteran’s Way and Negus Street. First to arrive was Webster Fire Chief Brian Hickey, and he found a van, fully involved, sitting precariously close to a wraparound porch of a large apartment house. Police, upon their arrival, immediately evacuated anyone who was left in the building. The fire did start to extend into parts of the porch prior to the fire department’s arrival, and also melted the vinyl siding of the entire “A” side of the structure. As first due Engine 3 arrived, the initial handline was stretched between the vehicle and the building, and the fire burning the exterior of the building was quickly extinguished. The hoseline was then directed toward the fully involved van and Webster jakes made quick work of the flames, gaining control in about 10 minutes. The dwelling was then rechecked for any further extension and was completely overhauled. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation by members of the Webster Fire and Police Departments. |
