The 914-6 GT Project

(Sep/2011) I finally dit it and jumped off the cliff! I started a build thread here http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-914-914-6-technical-forum/632760-last-new-914-6-gt-project.html and now you should be able to more easily follow the progress of the GT project as I continue to upload to the thread and get it up to date.

I have spent way too much time restructuring this entire section of the website and decided to include "sample" photos of several GT race cars detailing their unique differences. In the following photo galleries, you will be able to see photo sequences of the conversion, fabrication, installation, restoration, etc., of just about every corner of a 914-6 GT race car. We hope that you find it interesting and useful in your own 914-6 GT project or restoration.

Dino, I have not modified my GT as such so I have no real personal experience about the suspension settings with the larger diameter wheels. I would recommend going back to the original specification of using a 15 inch diameter wheel if possible. Not only will your car be more correct, but you'll have a more valuable vehicle if and when you decide to sell it. BTW, the 7s and 9s x15 inch wheels are getting harder and harder to find in that configuration... Armando

Oh, by the way, it has 7 and 9x16 wheels. Don't know if that makes a difference on the suspension or not. Also, I am using a pair of 180 lb rear springs. Is this too much for the weight of a 3.6 engine? Thanks again. Dino

Hello Armando, I wrote you a couple of years back and you were a great help. I am once again in need of some assistance. I tried looking through the archives on 914club and 914world but have had a tough time. I'm building a 914-6 GT clone. Here is the basic setup. - 3.6 engine - 915 transmission - Koni reds - 22 mm torsion bars I have not put in sway bars for front or back and many people are advising that I should. I am a big believer in examining what Porsche originally did and I particularly like their M471 versions. Could you please tell me what size sway bars I should be using in front and rear? The car will be used 95% on street and some driver education days. Maybe some autocross, but we are talking maybe once a year or so. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks again. Folks have to remember the days when these care were built. First of all nobody in the business back then in Europe was well paid. You did this work because you were a gearhead. The workmanship was driven by time pressure and the need to win on Sunday, sell on Monday. The lifespan of the cars was short, and often the life of the driver was even shorter. (As a mechanic, I still have some of the pay stubs. Would you believe FIFTY bucks a week? and this meant working hard days, often weekends, and traveling with the transporter. ALL of the mechanics tended to be a bit rough on the edges). A light car and a light driver would help the win. Porsches had strong drivetrains compared to the other fragile stuff that was running around. The bodywork and such was NOT a high priority. Those folks who insist on "restoring" or "recreating a car of that era these days can probably do a much better job. For instance, inert gas welding was a major luxury in Europe in the late sixties and early seventies. Most welding was done by hand with a gas flame or an unwieldy spot welder. Alignment jigs and fixtures were rare. Keep all of this in perspective before flaming each other out. And keep enjoying yourselves on these cars.

Here is how we unfortunately did it because we couldn't resist, check out this photo sequence if you care to spend the time http://www.pbase.com/9146gt/gt_chassis_stiff_kit_install_right_side Robert, I can assure you that there are NO 914-6 GTcars anywhere in the world that had this much attention paid in installing the rear steel reinforcements. I can guarantee it! Again, I realize we did not do this with the goal of duplicating the original Porsche factory workmanship, it would have been much, much easier and saved me hundreds of dollars (Yes! Hundreds!!!). Let me first set the record straight; 'Mark' is the guy that deserves ALL the recognition for the fantastic and talented work that he does, truly a "disappearing act". I continue to thank you Mark! Robert; I was not going to reply to you, a waste of my time, but I will say this. Don't you realize I know that my factory 914-6 is NOT a factory or dealer built GT? Are you kidding me Robert? I have personally posted no less than 1,000 photos documenting this fact and you have the brains to point this out to me? Buddy, go find something else to do, you have waaaaay too much time on your hands or are suffering from other issues. You almost imply that I�m in some sort of denial about my 914-6 not being a true �factory GT�. Amazing! Yes, we know that a Porsche is either born a 'GT' or is not a 'GT'; however, the sum of all those factory original 914-6 GT parts I now have makes my factory 914-6 more GT than anything else it ever was. Funny how you also say �Armando, face it you are not the Porsche factory nor do you have the original German workmanship�. Not that I want to criticize here the early Porsche workmanship of the �apprentices� that also worked on these cars, but to the second part of your sentence, we say �Thank God!� I want to thank all of you that posted replies as these are more meaningful to me. lol The only reason I posted the one comment from Benno in Germany was because I thought it really was a very nice compliment someone paid Mark Spraker for his exemplary work and not because I have some illusion or because I'm confused about the identify of my 914-6 GT project. Robert, I still think Benno can be correct about my GT being of the better GT's in the world! If is not, I can assure you it will be very, very close (down to the correct 2.0 liter Carrera 6 twin-plug racing engine. Note I said 'correct' and not 'spec' engine).

Armando, The world is full of idiots. I remember when I finished my 911 turbo. It was in my driveway looking like a 100 point show car and my neighbor came over and said " it's just a Volkswagen to me." What was he driving? - and old beat up truck. That was when he was driving because half the time his license was suspended for DUI! Some people are just on jealousy trips because they don"t have.

Robert, that is one of the stupidest comments I have heard lately, anything Armando does is to the highest standards. And is nicer in many areas than the Factory did back in the era. I restored a GT that use to belong to Sam Cabiglio that was an original paint car and is now in the hands of Seinfeld and I can tell you that much of the work done on those cars was quite crude from the factory. So I guess what you are saying is that if it is not FACTORY built than it is inferior? Take for example Kremer, (you ever hear of them) they built a number of cars (Replicas) that were superior to the Factory and beat them at there own game even at a place like Le Mans ( Which just in case you never heard of the place or you are not aware of is the crown jewel of racing). I have owned a number of Factory RSR's and 934's and 935's one of them being a Kremer that did very well at Le Mans, and a Daytona wining Factory 935 and a Kremer 962. I guess you would call the Kermer cars what KIT CARS and the workmanship inferior because they were not the Factory..... Kremer did use many Factory parts�. Get a life.....

One of the two cars is currently in my shop for a full restoration. It's a 914/6, which I will upgrade to a 914/6 GT look a like. The page (911 emergency brake mod) you are refering to is from a fellow 914 enthusiast (Wilco) here in Germany , who is hosting the pictures of the 911 rear brake conversion pictures for me. In the next weeks i will upload some new pictures of the conversion to Wilcos website. I'm very interested in detailed pictures of original rear drum brake modifications, like those of the nurburgring GT or some of rally GT's (e.g Monte Carlo GT). If you have some more informations of those modifications I would be very happy, if you could give me some hints.
