Other Porsche 914-6 GT Race Cars...

MY DISCLOSURES... I cannot state anything about these cars authenticity and my policy simply is that without the owner producing an “FIA Heritage Certificate”, not to be confused with the HTP (”Historical Technical Passport”), the burden of authenticity falls with the respective car’s owner and will be his responsibility to provide the proper documentation these cars truly deserve. Further, this effort reinforces and supports the FIA’s efforts to verify the real cars and flushing out the 'fakes'. By raising these standards, I hope to continue to improve the credibility of this web site.

Just in case you are not familiar with the terminology, below are the definitions:

HERITAGE CERTIFICATE: A document difficult to acquire. One needs to provide the complete history of the car and an unbroken chain of ownership to certify this car as being the “real deal”.

HISTORICAL TECHNICAL PASSPORT (HTP): This is a much easier document to achieve. It merely confirms the car meets all the 'technical aspects' of the model it represents (example); taking into consideration all the factory original period correct race parts I have collected for my 1970 Porsche 914-6 GT project, once completed, my GT could apply and qualify for the "HTP", but it will never qualify for a "Heritage Certificate".

One last comment; Until the car's owner produces said "Heritage Certificate", I would simply state the following: “the owner claims this car as”, or “this is supported by”.

Enjoy!

...Contained in these photo galleries, you will find an assortment and varying degrees of conversions done to 914-6 cars following the Porsche factory defined 914-6 GT "basic" specifications. I refer to the "basic" GT specification the inclusion of most of the following GT factory parts; 906 Twin-Plug 2.0 Liter Racing Engine https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/35518531, Endurance Racing Oil-Cooling System https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/22238730 including a front mounted BEHR Oil-Cooler https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/31354866, some GT cars were equiped with a larger 100 liter fuel tank https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/22223602 - https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/22224321 requiring significant modifications to addapt it to the front trunk of the 914 see here https://pbase.com/9146gt/my9146gt_shock_tower_reinforcements_install 908 Front Calipers https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/22350002 - https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/35028915 and Vented Rotors, 914-6 rear calipers https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/39738309 spaced for vented rotors https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/23962484, Rear Chassis Steel Reinforcement Kit https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/23962483 - https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/27584517, Koni Dual Externally Adjustable Competition Shocks https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/22320000 with GT Racing Rear Springs and spring-hats https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/27933371 (available in varying spring rates according to color code https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/27933372), Factory Steel Fender Flairs https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/23659460, Balsa Wood Reinforced Front https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/22321112 & Rear https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/22321288 Fiberglass Trunk Lids, Front https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/22395138 and Rear https://pbase.com/9146gt/gt_fiberglass_bumpers_factory_original_rr_bumper - https://pbase.com/9146gt/gt_fiberglass_bumpers_rear Bumpers and Rocker-Panels https://pbase.com/9146gt/gt_fiberglass_rocker_panels made of a light Fiberglass, specially designed and lighter (and not very comfortable!) Scheel Racing Bucket Seats https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/22425826 mounted on Scheel seat-tracks https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/22229313 - https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/22229320, a spartan interior using a carpeting kit made of a much lighter material, simple inner-door panels https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/22424269 with leather pull-straps to activate the door-latch release mechanism https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/22424294. I may have missed a few other GT components, but the majority of the 914-6 GT race cars appear to have been equipped as such.

After leaving the Porsche factory, their new owners added even more modifications to the cars including; roll-bars https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/22244482, different sway-bar configurations https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/22301900, 100-Liter Fuel Tanks, additional reinforcements such as in the area of the "Dog-Ear" at the rear suspension https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/23138727, the front windshield posts https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/26094097, etc.), Mechanical Headlight Raisers https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/22247795 eliminating the heavier electrical motors which actuate the retractable headlights (further lightening these cars), rear jacking-point supports https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/23138606, and further engine enhancements to improve performance in an effort to make the 2.0 liter engines of the GT's more competitive. For these reasons, there are probably no two 914-6 GT cars that were exactly alike...

Keep in mind that the Porsche factory did not have a "specific must-have list" of parts to convert a 914-6 factory car to the GT specification, but rather, they created approximately 400 "GT Kits" which were later made available to anyone wishing to upgrade their 914-6 cars for competition use. Depending on the event the GT was to be entered, the appropriate parts were then installed or removed from this so called "GT Kit". Between 1970 and 1971, the factory did initially built a number of 914-6 GT race cars (that number is between 33 to 38 cars) and these 914s later became more commonly known as the "factory-built" cars.

Please don't be offended if your 914-6 with steel fender flares is not included in this photo gallery. I do get requests to have some cars added to this gallery but I'm trying to maintain some control as to when a 914-6 with steel fender flares becomes a 914-6 GT, replica or otherwise. I hope to have clarified some of the mystery and misconceptions about the 914-6 GT race cars and allow you to better understand some of the not so obvious differences between these great and often misunderstood wonderful race cars...
