Scenes from historic Fort Pulaski on Cockspur Island
at the mouth of the Savannah River. The site of the
first use of rifled ballistics during the Civil War.
Union troops set batteries on Tybee Island and with
use of rifled cannons overtook the fort in 36 hours
by compromising the corner near the battery. Robert
E. Lee saw to the construction of this fort to with-
stand cannon balls at the time of construction. No
one knew the effect of the new rifled projectiles.
