Shimla, Himachal Pradesh


Shimla is probably one of India's most famous hill stations. The British might have left India,
but anyone who has been to Shimla can tell, they left an indelible mark on India's landscape.
Shimla, is the capital of the picturesque state of Himachal Pradesh, and once was the summer
capital of the pampered British Raj.

The town of Shimla lies at an elevation of around 2200m and the entire Shimla district has a
population of over 1,000,000. The weather is pleasant in summers and cold in the winters often
falling close to the freezing point. A narrow-gauge railway track connects Shimla to Kalka, 85 km
South, and there is an airport 15 km form Shimla. The easiest way to reach though is by car, a
total travel time of 7 hours between Delhi and Shimla. The road is a national highway and is well
maintained.

There is no dearth of hotels in Shimla, with around 500 hotels in and around the town including
the Five star Oberoi Cecil Hotel and many three star hotels. There are also a variety of Himachal
tourism hotels with Hotel Peterhoff being the best. During peak season, summer and early winter,
it is best to book in advance. One of the sour points of Shimla is that it has become extremely
commercialized, with touts and agents hounding you as you enter the town, especially in late
evenings.

Shimla is a beautiful city, with majestic views, buzzing bazaars, calming hills, historical
temples and churches coexisting, and provides a wonderful sense of India a century ago, ignoring
the Dominos pizza and the Barista cafe. In the mornings, a walk up the hill to the Mall Road can
be tiring with the thinning air, but defintiely worth it. Ofcourse you can also take an elevator
up the mountain. Shimla is a shoppers paradise with plenty of shops offering good shawls,
traditional crafts, fruits and juices at extremely good prices. The HPMC juice is a delicacy, and
the Sutter house wine is quite sweet to taste. Also, one must always buy the traditional Himachal
pahari cap.

If you are in Delhi, and have a weekend to spare, a trip up to Shimla and the neighboring towns
should definitely be on the itinerary.

May 1939, I was born here. My father was working at the Western High Command HQ in those days. Five out of Six siblings have Simla as their Birth Place. The older practice of moving the Government offices to Delhi during winter had been discontinued due to the pressures of WWII. I grew up in Simla (Sanjauli) till September 1947, when the Offices shifted permanently to Delhi.When I left Simla, I was studying at Harcourt Butler School located on Jakhoo hills. After that I have visited Simla only once with my children and showed them the place where we lived. The pictures are great, but memory is fading. As place of my birth Simla is always in my heart and at tips of my fingers while completing Numerous forms around the world. Long live Simla and my memories.

We arrived in Shimla yesterday from England and it was just like home, cold, wet and the cloud reduced visibility to just a few hundred yards.....but today, the sun is shining, the clouds have gone and the views are stunning. Off to The Mall for a bit of light retail therapy and a walk around, but can already tell that this is going to be a great day in a rather special place.

This is the place where we brothers grew up and studied. These pictures made very nostalgic. I was also sad to see that it is a very congested palce now. I hope to be there very soon as some of my school mates still live there.

Nice pictures and details of Shimla. I was in he town in September 2007 and could nate take quality pictures as compared to those in this site. Beautiful pictorial and true presentation of Shimla City. Keep it up.

The photographs are so real and so compromising with reality. I rememeber going to Har Court Butler school passing through the Mall, the Telegraph ofice, Scandal point , up the ridge to the Daulat Singh Park,ner the Muncipal Library, up the Crist Church and finally to school for full five years to and fro from choda maidan nr Cecil Hotel. I was present when the Lala Lajpat Rai statue was installed , it was a sight.For college studies near Oakland school we had to go the same way . It was a great feeling. After 1962, I visited often Simla only during summer vacations from IIT Madras since my paarnts were still living there.Simla has not changed over the years. The mall, buildings and hustle and bustle of people has not changed over the years . I must cofess that of all the hill stations i have travelled in India while in Air Foce Simla remains my favorite as the Queen. God bless , let it charm Indian crowds for centuries for its kipling, british and imperial grandeur.

In the picture titled a "a typical Shimla home", the green signs clearly state that it is the municipal library.

This is misleading because most (90%?) of Shimla lives in crowded broken down homes. A house like that would be a rarity.
